EU Blindly Accepting Claims About Russian Troops in Ukraine - Russian Diplomat

Source : http://en.ria.ru/politics

BRUSSELS, August 31 (RIA Novosti) – The European Union is still trammeled by inertia of sanctions and blindly accepts unsubstantiated claims about the presence of Russian forces in Ukraine, Russia’s envoy to the EU Vladimir Chizhov said Sunday.

“The EU is still in captivity of sanctions inertia. I gather most leaders of the European countries lately publicly acknowledged, first, the ineffectiveness of sanctions, and secondly, that it's a dead end. But it seems that they haven’t thought of anything else anyway," the envoy said.

“Even worse that they took the statements delivered by the Ukrainian president in Brussels and stories which were spread by NATO representatives also here in Brussels without question and, in fact, blindly accepted unsubstantiated claims about the presence of Russian armed forces on the territory of Ukraine,” Chizhov added.

“Although the development of the Ukrainian crisis during recent months should have taught them to sort truth from fiction and reality from fantasies of Kiev and some of his patrons," the Russia diplomat added.

On Sunday night, European leaders requested the European Commission and the European External Action Service to present within a week a new set of sanctions against Russia, promising to impose them if the situation in Ukraine remains the same or worsens.

Relations between Russia and the West have deteriorated in regard to the situation in Ukraine. The West has repeatedly accused Russia of building up forces on its border with eastern Ukraine and supplying independence supporters with weapons, a claim Moscow has rejected.

In late July, the European Union and the United States proceeded from individual sanctions imposed on a number of people and companies to penalties on whole sectors of the Russian economy. In response, Russia limited food imports from countries that imposed sanctions on it, namely the US, the EU member states, Canada, Australia and Norway.

Slovakia says it may veto new EU sanctions against Russia

Slovakia said it might veto new EU sanctions against Russia, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said after the EU summit on Sunday, APA reports quoting ITAR-TASS.

“I believe that the sanctions will become senseless and counter-productive. Slovakia may use its right of veto,” Fico said, explaining Slovakia would use its right of veto if it decided that the new anti-Russian sanctions would undermine its economic growth.

The Slovak prime minister said there was no point in imposing new sanctions until the EU knew the results of the previously adopted penalties.

In July, the European Union imposed economic sanctions against Russia over it policy in eastern Ukraine. They include a ban on conclusion of military contracts; restrictions on acquisition of some new technologies, equipment and materials for its oil sector as well as some restrictions on banking services.

Maja Kocijanic, a spokeswoman for the EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, said last Friday that the EU Commission was still to analyze the consequences of the EU-imposed anti-Russian sanctions.

The EU summit has given the EU Commission one week to prepare proposals on tougher sanctions against Russia, European Commission President Herman Van Rompuy told a news conference after the EU summit in Brussels.

He said the further steps on sanctions would depend on the situation in Ukraine, which was getting worse every day.

The EU summit noted the recent escalation of military conflict in Ukraine of which it had been informed by Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko.

The European Council voiced its concern with the Russian military presence in Ukrainian territory.

Russia’s Defense Ministry ridicules NATO’s photo-proof of invasion in Ukraine

Source : http://www.strategic-culture.org/news

It makes no sense to comment in detail on the satellite imagery released by NATO as “proof” of Russia’s military involvement in Ukraine, Defense Ministry’s spokesman said, pointing out that even high NATO officials were hesitant to put their names on it.

Referring to NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Supreme Allied Commander Europe Philip Breedlove, and NATO Spokesperson Oana Lungescu, Russia’s Defense Ministry spokesman Major-General Igor Konashenkov ridiculed the so-called NATO proof.

“You know, it has become ridiculous… If earlier, someone would at least put their names on those images, be it Breedlove, Rasmussen, or even Lungescu, now, they are hesitant,” Konashenkov said as cited by RIA Novosti. “It makes no sense to seriously comment on this.”

The General also criticized western media outlets for accepting such images and anti-Russian stance at face value.

“The phrase ‘NATO published satellite shots of Russian troops' presence in Ukraine’ has become as common in recent months as the famous ‘British scientists have discovered…" Konashenkov said, referring to a media cliché often ridiculed in Russia. “Usually those words are followed by the results of some new crazy research that has no practical sense whatsoever.”

“Apparently, the new Secretary General of NATO in the near future will have to exert much effort in order to restore the severely tainted image of the alliance as a high-status international organization,”Konashenkov added.

The Defense Ministry statement follows a war-mongering media rhetoric blaming Russia for invading Ukraine, after Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Thursday, accused Russia for violating its sovereignty and called on the UN Security Council to assess the situation.

Simultaneous to Kiev's accusations, NATO made public satellite images that were offered as “proof”that Russian self-propelled artillery was on the Ukrainian territory, as well as about 1,000 Russian troops taking part in special operations in eastern Ukraine. The images, as usual, were provided by a commercial company DigitalGlobe operating civilian satellites. The images were not altered or edited with NATO experts only adding extra information for the general public to understand what they are looking for.

The US as always sided with Poroshenko's statements and NATO-offered evidence, with US Department of State spokesperson Jen Psaki saying that Washington has “no reason to doubt their [NATO's] assessment.”

Meanwhile both the head of OSCE’s Ukrainian monitoring team and Russia's representative said there was no Russian presence spotted across the Ukraine border, refuting claims that a full-scale invasion was underway.

On Thursday, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said Russian troops had entered Ukraine. The statement came as NATO released satellite images that it claimed showed Russian self-propelled artillery on Ukrainian territory. The alliance said about 1,000 Russian servicemen were taking part in hostilities in eastern Ukraine.

Russia's permanent representative to the EU Vladimir Chizhov also said neither NATO, the United States or the European Union have presented any evidence of Russian troop presence in the east of Ukraine.

According to him, the “stuffing of misinformation through the media and directly from Kiev” each time is carried out on the eve of important meetings at the EU level, this time ahead of the summit on August 30 in Brussels, “probably in anticipation of some critical language and even sanctions from the EU,” Itar-Tass quotes.

And indeed, US President Barack Obama joined the chorus of anti-Russian rhetoric on Thursday, warning Moscow that more sanctions are in the works as the US is currently in consultation with its“European allies” ahead of a NATO meeting next week.

Russia Never Conducted Warfare in Ukraine, Rules Out Prospects – Defense Ministry

Source : http://en.ria.ru/politics

MOSCOW, August 30 (RIA Novosti) — Russia has never held military actions in Ukraine and is not planning to undertake any in the future, Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said Saturday in an interview with Slovak television.

“Russia has never conducted warfare in Ukraine and will not do so," Antonov said.

“Obviously, Russia is not waging any war. Russia’s policy is not to allow the development of the situation on the worst-case scenario. There are some forces which are trying to collide these two peoples to start a war between Ukraine and Russia,"Antonov said.

He added that Russia would do its utmost to avoid such development of the situation.

Russia has repeatedly called on the warring sides in Ukraine to launch dialogue and solve the issue through a peaceful and political process.

On Firday, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for a conciliatory dialogue among all the sides of the conflict. Speaking at the Seliger youth forum Friday, Putin said that the “fratricidal war must be stopped immediately," but noted that the Kiev government prefers the language of ultimatums.

Ukraine’s southeastern regions never recognized the legitimacy of the new authorities that took over the country after the February 22 regime change. The regions protested the new government and held referendums on self-determination, voting to separate from Ukraine. In return, Kiev launched a military operation to crack down on the independence supporters.

Moscow continues to insist on an immediate end to the «punitive operation» in eastern Ukraine, which claimed the lives of 2,220 people and injured about 6,000 between mid-April and August 17, according to the UN report published Friday.

Russia ready to repel threats: Putin

Source : http://www.presstv.ir/detail

Russian President Vladimir Putin says Moscow’s armed forces are always ready to repel any threat against the country.

“We should always be ready to repel any aggression towards Russia,” Putin said on Friday.Putin went on to say that "Russia's partners... should understand it's best not to mess with us."

Western powers and the Kiev government accuse Moscow of having a hand in the crisis in eastern Ukraine, which erupted when Kiev launched military operations in April to silence pro-Russia protests, but the Kremlin denies the accusation.

Referring to allegations of the presence of Russian troops in Ukraine, he said that "Russia is far from being involved in any large-scale conflicts," and that the United States and the European Union were responsible for the "unconstitutional" removal of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and replacing him with a “pro-European government.”

"Small villages and large cities [are] surrounded by the Ukrainian army which is directly hitting residential areas with the aim of destroying the infrastructure,” he added.

Violence intensified in May after the two flashpoint regions of Donetsk and Luhansk held local referendums, in which their residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence from Ukraine.

NATO planning rapid-deployment force of 10,000 troops to counter Russia – report

Source : http://rt.com/news

NATO is reportedly working towards the creation of an expeditionary force composed of 10,000 troops from seven different member states as a result of escalating tensions with Russia over the conflict in Ukraine.

According to the Financial Times, the force’s creation will be spearheaded by Britain and involve contributions from Denmark, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Norway, and the Netherlands. Canada is also interested in joining the group, but it’s not known what its final decision will be.

Although no formal announcement has been made, British Prime Minister David Cameron is expected to declare its formation at the upcoming NATO summit in Wales on September 4th.

Many specifics have yet to be worked out or announced, but planners are reportedly implementing ways to increase the number of soldiers involved even more if necessary. Air and naval units will be integrated into the group, as well as ground troops led by British commanders.

As noted by the Times, the creation of the force comes as a response to Russia’s involvement in the ongoing Ukrainian crisis, with the ultimate goal being to “create a fully functioning, division-sized force for rapid deployment and regular, frequent exercises.”NATO has accused Russia of deploying more than 1,000 troops into Ukraine to bolster separatists in the eastern part of the country.

Russia, however, insists that it does not have troops operating inside of Ukraine and has dismissed NATO’s assertions.

Despite the fact that NATO has opted not to act militarily in Ukraine – unnamed sources told Foreign Policy on Friday that there are no plans to confront Russia with anything more than stronger sanctions – Jonathan Eyal of the London-based Royal United Services Institute said the group needs to demonstrate that its eastern European members are just as integral to the alliance as other states.

“We need to end the idea of different zones of security in Europe,” he told the Financial Times. “We need to be talking about prepositioning, regular rotation of troops and making it very clear that we do not accept that the eastern Europeans are in some different category of membership of NATO.”

The revelation also arrives just a few days after NATO’s Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen expressed interest in forming “a more visible presence” in Eastern Europe in the form of facilities capable of rapidly receiving “response forces” needed to counter Russia.

For his part, Russia’s envoy to NATO, Aleksandr Grushko, said any attempt to stretch further into the region would impact Moscow’s own security planning.

Ukraine Demands Arms, NATO Membership as Rebels Advance on Mariupol

Source : http://news.antiwar.com/2014/08/29/

Ukraine’s government continues to escalate its claims of a Russian invasion, now insisting that there are several thousand Russian troops, backed by tanks and artillery, and mysteriously totally unphotographed in eastern Ukraine.

The eastern civil war continues along the nation’s southeast coastline, where rebels are advancing on the key Donetsk Province port of Mariupol. Hundreds of rebels were photographed making there way toward Mariupol, but again, none of the “thousands” of Russians were seen.

The Ukrainian military is now picking up calls for a dramatic increase in NATO shipment of weapons and ammunition, saying they have not been providing any weapons to the troops invading the breakaway east.

Ukraine also wants to become a member of NATO now, because then when they come up with their dubious claims of Russian “invasion” it would immediately start World War 3. NATO, needless to say, has not generally admitted members with existing territorial disputes, and would not consider Ukraine specifically because doing so would quickly escalate into a massive war.

Incredibly, while the non-credible invasion claims continue to circulate, Presidents Putin and Poroshenko met and worked out a deal on more shipments of humanitarian aid into Ukraine’s east. Russia will provide future aid by rail. The last humanitarian aid shipments Russia made, last Friday by truck, were also dubbed an “invasion” by Ukrainian officials.

Lavrov: No proof given for Western allegations about Russian troops in Ukraine

Source : http://novorossia.today

Russia’s only reaction to NATO accusations of interfering militarily in Ukraine will be a consistent position of putting an end to bloodshed and establish dialogue between warring parties in Ukraine, Russia’s FM said.

No facts about Russian military being present on the territory of Ukraine have ever been presented, Sergey Lavrov pointed out, while speculation on the issue has been voiced repeatedly, he stressed.

“It’s not the first time we’ve heard wild guesses, though facts have never been presented so far,” Lavrov said at a press conference in Moscow.

“There have been reports about satellite imagery exposing Russian troop movements. They turned out to be images from videogames. The latest accusations happen to be much the same quality,” he said.

“We’ll react by remaining persistent in our policies to stay bloodshed and give a start to the nationwide dialogue and negotiations about the future of Ukraine, with participation of all Ukrainian regions and political forces, something that was agreed upon in Geneva back in April and in Berlin [in August], yet what is being so deliberately evaded by our Western partners now,” Lavrov said.

Sergey Lavrov pointed out that the only means to decrease the number of casualties among the civilian population in Donetsk and Lugansk Regions is by self-defense militia pushing Ukrainian troops and National Guards out.

Black Sea Fleet to Receive 11 New Vessels by End of Year – Russian Navy

Source : http://en.ria.ru/russia

MOSCOW, August 28 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Black Sea Fleet is to receive 11 new ships and service vessels, including two anti-sabotage boats, six service vessels, two diesel-electric submarines and two frigates, Navy Commander Adm. Viktor Chirkov said Thursday.

“By the end of the year the Black Sea Fleet will receive two Grachonok-class anti-sabotage boats and six service vessels of different classes. Two Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarines, the ‘Novorossiysk’ and the ‘Rostov-on-Don,’ will join the Black Sea Fleet this year,” Chirkov said.

Chirkov also said that by the end of 2014 the Black Sea Fleet is to receive a new Project 1135.6 frigate, the “Admiral Grigorovich,” and in September-October welcome a second ship of the same project, the “Admiral Essen.” Overall, the project entails six ships, with all of them going to the Black Sea Fleet.

Earlier, the commander-in-chief announced that in 2017 Russia will start building a new generation of non-nuclear submarines. The submarines are expected to be equipped with an anaerobic system that increases speed and provides submarines with the ability to remain submerged while recharging their batteries instead of having to surface to do so.

The Project 636.3 Varshavyanka-class submarines should be constructed by 2016. The third of the six submarines has been scheduled to launch Thursday in St. Petersburg. The submarines are primarily intended for anti-ship and anti-submarine missions in relatively shallow waters.

Russia enhances military prowess for self-protection: Putin

Source : English.news.cn

MOSCOW, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Russia is strengthening nuclear deterrence capability and equipping troops with latest armaments for its own security, President Vladimir Putin said Friday.

"We should feel ourselves protected and have the possibility to implement our economic and social plans," Interfax quoted him as saying at a youth forum in central Russia's Tver region.

Still, Putin said, Moscow is not going to engage in large-scale military conflicts but is constantly on alert to repulse any aggression.

The president said the current air raids of Ukrainian troops in that country's eastern regions are similar to what Nazi Germany did to Soviet cities in World War II.

He stressed that the western part of Ukraine should not impose its values on the whole country.

Kiev must start negotiations with the restive eastern regions over rights of the people, Putin said.

Though the Minsk tripartite meeting came with no breakthrough to the Ukraine crisis this Tuesday, the international society was even more alarmed by reports of fighting in east Ukraine spreading southward.

On Wednesday, Ukraine and Western countries accused Russia of launching a new incursion into Ukraine by sending its troops and hardware into the Donetsk region. Russia denied the charges.

Russia, India to Continue Joint Air Force Drills in November - Moscow

Source : http://en.ria.ru/news

LIPETSK, August 29 (RIA Novosti) - The second phase of joint Russian-Indian Air Force exercise “Aviaindra-2014” is set to take place in India in November, deputy chief of the Russian Air Force's General Staff, Aleksandr Lyapkin, told reporters Friday.

“The second phase of the exercise will take place in India after the end of monsoon season, on November 10-21. The location isn't known yet, this will become clear in October, when planning is finished,” Lyapkin said.

Russia is currently hosting the first ever Russian-Indian air force drills, which involve joint flights with mixed Russian-Indian crews on Su-30 SM “Flanker-C” aircraft and Mil Mi-35 “Hind E” helicopters. The Indian troops arrived in Russia on August 25.

The drills are taking place at the Pogonovo and Ashuluk testing ranges in Voronezh and Astrakhan regions. Flanker-C crews are to carry out air refueling training, while helicopter crews work on extinguishing fires and conducting search and rescue missions.

According to Indian Air Commodore Ajay Rathore, the Indian Air Force uses Su-30MKI, MiG-21, Mi-35 and other types of Russian-produced aircraft at home, with which they are satisfied.

“We have been using Russian military equipment for over 40 years, but this is the first time we conduct joint air drills, though we should have done it a long time ago. We have big hopes for this kind of pilot trainings. We would like to share our experience with our Russian colleagues and learn from their experiences using prospective aircrafts. I hope that ‘Aviaindra’ will be the first of many joint trainings,” Rathore said.

Russia and India are major partners in the field of military cooperation. Over 70 percent of all military equipment used by the Indian Armed Forces was produced in Russia or the Soviet Union. According to estimates made by the Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, Russia provided India with $4.78 billion in military technology in 2013. In November 2013, the “Vikramaditya” Russian aircraft carrier (formerly known as the “Admiral Gorshkov”) was commissioned to India. The warship was purchased for a record-breaking $2.35 billion.

Russia and India are currently working on contracts to export the newest Sukhoi and Mikoyan fighter aircraft to India. Russia intends to supply India with Beriev A-50 airborne early warning aircraft as well.

The countries are also working together to develop new weapons. The Russian-Indian BrahMos Aerospace joint venture has created the “BrahMos” supersonic cruise missile, which has been used by the Indian Armed Forces since 2006. The countries have agreed to jointly develop a fifth-generation fighter jet and military transport aircraft.

Russia denies rumors of 'invasion' of Ukraine

Russian military men and hardware do not take any participation in the events in Ukraine, Russian Permanent Representative to the OSCE Andrei Kelin told Itar-Tass after the meeting of the Permanent Council of organization: "We have clearly stated before that there is no participation of Russian troops, we do not deliver any hardware to Ukraine either," he said.

"We've heard many statements from the Ukrainian leadership that quickly turned out to be a lie. Now we are witnessing another hoax, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Defense and Security, Yevgeny Serebrennikov told RIA Novosti.

"Lies has become an integral feature of the so-called Kiev authorities, so Mr. Poroshenko will not surprise anyone either in Russia or in the West. I can only say that there are no grounds for such words, as the junta still continues blame-shifting," head of the Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Leonid Slutsky said.

Aerospace defense troops hold war games with air defense drills

ASHULUK (Astrakhan region), August 19. /ITAR-TASS/. Russian Aerospace Defense Troops are holding fire drills of air defense missile systems S-300 and S-400 during large-scale military exercises near Russia’s southern city of Astrakhan on Tuesday.

Around 800 servicemen and more than 200 units of military hardware are participating in war games, spokesman for Russian Defense Ministry Colonel Igor Klimov told reporters.

He noted that formations assigned to protect Moscow and Russia’s central industrial district are involved in military exercises.

“Three air defense missile regiments armed with S-400 Triumf and S-300 Favorit are practicing fire drills in the march,” Klimov said. Target systems Kaban and Pishchal were used in fire drills, he added.

The colonel noted that seven trains and three military transport airplanes Ilyushin Il-76 were required to transfer military units to firing range Ashuluk.

Red alert: NATO mission creep advancing to Russian border

Source : http://rt.com/op-edge

Buried beneath news of the Ice Bucket Challenge, and the latest video release by the Islamic State was an interview by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen that should be of immediate concern to everyone.

These days, the actual importance of a news story is inversely proportional to the number of American media outlets that refuse to touch it. That would explain the virtual non-existence of the NATO chief’s interview on Wednesday that he gave to a handful of European newspapers.

Never content to let a good war go to waste, Rasmussen said the 28-member military bloc would be “spearheading” its way into the fleshy flanks of Eastern Europe, just a missile lob away from the Russian frontier. The reason – “Russian aggression” – should surprise nobody who has been following Ukraine’s slow-motion meltdown ever since Kiev attempted to form a more perfect union with Russia instead of the European Union. That’s when the Western-backed fireworks display, complete with John McCain and Victoria Nuland agitating/feeding the crowds in central Kiev, exploded, leaving Ukraine on the verge of total collapse, and US-Russian relations in tatters.

But I digress. Rasmussen chose his words carefully as he proudly pointed to NATO’s latest road map to Russia, decorated with brand new red flags: "In order to be able to provide such rapid reinforcements you also need some reception facilities in host nations. So it will involve the pre-positioning of supplies, of equipment, preparation of infrastructure, bases, and headquarters. The bottom line is you will in the future see a more visible NATO presence in the east."

"Reception facilities?" Rasmussen makes the militarization of Eastern Europe sound so harmless and quaint. In a best-case scenario, NATO’s expansionist plans for Eastern Europe – which military observers anticipate will be in Poland and the Baltic States – will usher in a new arms race on the European continent (For those not familiar with modern maps, Latvia and Estonia share immediate borders with mainland Russia, whereas Lithuania and Poland envelop the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad).

There is probably no need to mention the worst-case scenario here, since in the event of another global conflagration it won’t matter what we brand it because few people will be around to remember it. As Albert Einstein once quipped: “I do not know with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.”

Paratroopers from the U.S. Army's 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team participate in training exercises with the Polish 6 Airborne Brigade' soldiers at the Land Forces Training Centre in Oleszno near Drawsko Pomorskie, north west Poland May 1, 2014. (Reuters)

It is important to consider several other remarks by the NATO chief since an arms race in Europe will only be a pleasant development for the merchants of death from the military industrial complex hawking their wares around an increasingly shaken planet.

Asked whether there would be permanent NATO bases in Eastern Europe, Rasmussen did not miss a beat: “The brief answer is yes. To prevent misunderstanding I use the phrase 'for as long as necessary'. Our eastern allies will be satisfied when they see what is actually in the readiness action plan.”

Rasmussen said NATO forces could be deployed “within hours.”

The NATO chief then made some broad generalizations regarding Russia that were quite simply wrongheaded. This is no insignificant matter because when the average person on the street misjudges the geopolitical situation the stakes are not very high. But when the leader of the world’s most fearsome fighting force flunks a question on very recent history then that could be a sign we may be heading for some major turbulence.

Here is Rasmussen’s (mis)statement: “We have to face the reality that Russia does not consider NATO a partner. Russia is a nation that unfortunately for the first time since the Second World War has grabbed land by force. Obviously we have to adapt to that.”

Certainly Rasmussen recalls that it was Russia that requested on numerous occasions participation in NATO’s missile defense system, arguing that cooperation between the two sides on this controversial technology - which, in fact, may give the Europeans countries a false sense of security given that the system may not work as effectively as advertised – would only strengthen their ability to maintain peace and security on the continent.

Furthermore, if the system was really designed with Iran in mind, as has been claimed, wouldn’t Tehran seriously reconsider any evil designs against the European Union if it knew that Russia was also on board the project?

By flatly refusing Russia’s participation in Europe’s missile defense system, NATO and the United States have essentially admitted that the so-called reset between Moscow and Washington had been a deceptive ruse from the start, designed to make Russia believe that the West was sincere about a security partnership when in fact it wanted nothing of the sort. Worse, it could mean that the missile defense system itself is actually being designed with Russia in mind. Indeed, that is the unfortunate conclusion that Russia's military has been forced to make.

Rasmussen’s remark that Russia “grabbed land by force” – apparently in reference to the Crimean Peninsula - is also patently wrong. The citizens of Crimea, watching helplessly as Ukraine erupted in unbridled violence and bloodshed, made the democratic decision to hold a referendum to join the Russian Federation. Such a development cannot be labeled a land grab (It should be noted that next month Scotland – and without the nuisance of bombs going off in their territory – will also vote in a referendum to decide whether or not to remain in the United Kingdom).

Finally, Rasmussen mused on Russia’s“remarkable change” in terms of its military capabilities over the past.

“We also saw a remarkable change in the Russian military approach and capability since, for instance, the Georgian war in 2008. We have seen the Russians improve their ability to act swiftly. They can within a very, very, short time convert a major military exercise into an offensive military operation,"he fretted.

As the leader of 28-member NATO, Rasmussen should know better than anybody that any military worth its salt should be able to “act swiftly” and “convert a major military exercise into an offensive military operation,” as NATO itself has been recklessly doing in numerous foreign countries over the last decade.

The difference, however, between NATO’s long list of global “interventions” and Russia’s conflict with Georgia is that Russian peacekeepers were deliberately attacked and killed by Georgian forces, thus prompting Russia to respond in kind. Is Russia not even permitted to defend itself from foreign attacks, even if the size of the invading force is small?

Since it has been so long since NATO actually carried out a legitimate war it apparently has forgotten what one looks like. What NATO has done in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Pakistan, amongst many other places, should give anybody – and most of all, the Russians – tremendous pause.

In fact, Rasmussen seems more concerned with Russia’s ability to defend itself and “act swiftly” than anything else.

So how can such comments be explained, and why the sudden ratcheting up of tensions with Russia?

Although it may seem ridiculous to blame the sudden upsurge in bad blood on simple ‘Putin-envy,’ but there could be some truth to that. After all, the Russian president has been on a winning streak recently, much to the detriment of particular Western designs. Not only did the Russian leader almost singlehandedly defuse what appeared to be a certain American military offensive against Syria, his country also organized one of the most successful Olympic games in recent memory.

Moscow also got an unexpected visit in the summer by Edward Snowden, an American whistleblower from the National Security Agency who was granted political asylum by Russia after turning over thousands of classified documents to Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald in Hong Kong. His revelations shed a glaring light on the extent of the NSA’s controversial intelligence work, as well as damaging Washington’s relations with some of its key allies, including Germany.

However, the real reason for NATO’s continual push eastwards is probably due to nothing more than crude geopolitical advantage.

The premier Western guru on geopolitical affairs, Zbigniew Brzezinski, previously mentioned the strategic importance of Ukraine for fulfilling his deranged dream of America becoming “the first, only, and last truly global superpower.”

In an interview with Kiev’s Weekly Digest in May 2005, Brzezinski coolly calculated that Ukraine “is certainly not a pawn; it may not be a queen, but it certainly is an important element on the chessboard – one of the most important.” I wonder what chess pieces Brzezinski would select to symbolize Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania? That is a question the people of those countries may want to consider.

Of course, one does not normally make allusions to the greatest game of strategy when discussing the question of democracy or human rights; that is because in NATO and America’s playbook democracy and the interests of the people are only of secondary importance.

Fear-mongering over an imaginary threat from Russia helps NATO break down national doors that would otherwise remain closed. Eastern Europe is being sacrificed as a pawn in NATO's great game.

Russian Military Servicemen Detained by Ukraine Accidently Cross Border - Source

Source : http://en.ria.ru/russia

MOSCOW, August 26 (RIA Novosti) - Russian military servicemen detained by Ukraine’s military were patrolling the border and most likely crossed it by accident, a source in the Russian Defense Ministry said Tuesday.

“These military servicemen were in fact involved in patrolling the Russian-Ukrainian border area and most likely crossed [the border] by accident at an unequipped and unmarked zone, and as far as I know they didn’t resist the armed forces of Ukraine [during their detention],” the source said.

The source pointed out that Ukrainian military have crossed into Russia several times, in larger numbers, carrying weapons and with military hardware, but the Russian side did not make fuss about it and allowed them to return to Ukraine.

Sergei Lavrov: ‘ISIS was labeled as a terrorist organization only when it acted against U.S. interests in Iraq’

Source : APA

Moscow. Farid Akbarov – APA. “At the beginning of the Arab Spring, we proposed our partners in the West that we should cooperate.

A joint fight against global terrorism was one of our proposals. Our partners agreed on it, but when it came to action they did the opposite. They offered support to all the groups that opposed governments in the countries where the Arab Spring was happening”, said Russian FM Sergei Lavrov during today’s briefing, APA’s Moscow correspondent reported.

According to him, terrorist groups that are fighting against governments in the countries where the Arab Spring is happening have now become the target of the West: “Our western partners did it in Libya and other North African countries, in Syria, and Iraq. Those terrorist groups eventually acted against western countries themselves. We saw it in Mali, now we’re seeing it in Syria and Iraq. ISIS was supported by the West as it was fighting against Bashar Assad. But when ISIS acted against U.S. interests in Iraq and targeted Baghdad, it was declared terrorist organization by the West. When they saw that ISIS posed a threat to U.S. projects in Iraq, then they decided to take actions against it”.

Sergei Lavrov also said that ISIS is already out of control.

Russia Ready for Any Format to Discuss Situation in Ukraine – Lavrov

Source : RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, August 25 (RIA Novosti) – Russia is ready for any type of format to discuss the situation in Ukraine: from direct bilateral contacts to a “Normandie format,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday.

“We are more than ready, and Russian President Vladimir Putin has emphasized this several times, to any format as long as there is some sort of a result. As soon as we started to move away from the military conflict in Ukraine, a civilian war, to national dialogue, to forming a national unity, on that need that was agreed on February 21…,” Lavrov said during a briefing.

Lavrov said that Moscow is ready “to work in any format: ready to direct bilateral contacts, ready for contacts in the Normandie quartet, or the Geneva quartet.”

“The main thing is that the form doesn’t change the content,” he added.

Earlier in July, Lavrov said that Russia will do its utmost to end the bloodshed in Ukraine and to create conditions for negotiations between the conflicting parties in order to find the political solution “that would ensure the rights of all the citizens and regions of Ukraine.”

Since Kiev launched special military operation against independence supportersin eastern Ukraine in April, hundreds of people, including civilians, children, and journalists on professional duty have died in the region.

Top diplomats from Russia, the United States, the European Union and Ukraine met in Geneva on April 17 to devise road map, which called for an end to the violence in the region, amnesty for all those involved in the fighting and a dialogue between the state authorities and independence supporters.

However, the resulting Geneva Accords did not stop Kiev from proceeding with its military operation, which resulted in more victims.

Moscow has repeatedly urged for an immediate end to the ongoing military action, stressing the importance of a peaceful dialogue and expressing its readiness to participate in consultations.

Poland, Baltics Urge NATO to Target Russia with Europe’s Ballistic Missile ‘Shield’

Source : http://en.ria.ru/military_news

MOSCOW, August 24 (RIA Novosti) - Several NATO member states have reportedly thrown their weight behind an agenda of targeting Russia with the US-controlled ballistic missile “shield,” which is being built in Europe to allegedly guard the European Union against Iran, Germany’s Der Spiegel said Sunday.

According to the German daily, the push comes from Poland and the Baltic trio of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia who claim they “feel threatened by Russia’s intervention into Ukraine.”

Ahead of the NATO summit at the end of next week, the four countries have urged the military bloc to mention Moscow as a potential aggressor in its summit communique and have safeguards against Russia hardwired into the document, as they did with Iran.

“The majority, especially Germany, have opposed [this proposal] to avoid provoking Moscow unnecessarily, because NATO had spent years trying to assure the Russians that its missile shield wouldn’t target them,” Der Spiegel said.

The German paper said further debates had been put off till after the summit, which is scheduled for 4-5 September in Newport, South Wales.

The move came after NATO hit out at Russia for allegedly ordering itshumanitarian aid convoy across the border with Ukraine, which it said was a flagrant violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Russia’s ambassador to UN, Vitaly Churkin, retorted that Kiev’s permission was granted to Moscow back on August 12, while the Red Cross bowed out of escorting the convoy after leaving the 227 trucks stranded at the border for a week. The vehicles were confirmed by Ukrainian customs officials to be carrying food, water and generators to the besieged city of Luhansk in Ukraine’s east.

NATO has repeatedly blamed Russia for the escalation of tensions in Ukraine and building up arms and troops on the country’s border. The alliance has used the crisis to justify an expansion of its military forces near Russian borders, bumping up the number of air patrol missions in Eastern Europe. Today, the United States has missile defense bases in Turkey, Bulgaria, Poland and the Czech Republic.

The Russian invasion of United States still underway

Source : Source : http://english.pravda.ru/opinion/columnists

A spokesman for the Department of Defense stated today, "that it is still believed, that the Russian invasion of the United States is still underway," although the spokesmen admitted that "the Russian tactics seem to be inscrutable," at this time, "which is typical and to be expected by the Russians."

The invasion started roughly 2 years ago, and is a "very slow sort of invasion," a spokesman for the Pentagon announced. The invasion began, when two well made Russian aircraft landed in the United States loaded with food and supplies, as a relief effort from hurricane "Sandy" which hit the east coast of the United States during the late hurricane season. An actual photograph, of the curious Russian made aircraft above, is shown actually landing on the tarmac in the United States.

The spokesman for the Department of Defense stated that they were "surprised" that the Russians actually "had" such well made aircraft, and hoped that the aircraft would return to Russia safely. Meanwhile the United States Air force reported that the Russian aircraft were actually "tracked" by NORAD and they did indeed return to Russian soil at an undisclosed location.

Army Military Intelligence reported that once the food and supplies were "offloaded" from the Russian aircraft, it has disappeared. It was speculated that the food and supplies were sold on the black market. The army spokesman said, "The labels on the can food, written in Russian, may have been "more valuable" as souvenirs, to American citizens than American can food labels. When New York residents were asked what happened to the food and supplies they replied, "They did not recall."

The Pentagon believes that the Russian strategy hinges on any upcoming hurricanes whereby to continue their invasion of the United States, and that that is their "ulterior" motive. The National Weather Service has been required to alert the Department of Defense at their soonest convenience in order to predict any future Russian Aircraft activity. The National Weather service has stated, "We do not see a serious hurricane season due to variations in El Nino patterns."

Two days ago Raytheon approached congress and offered to build an advanced radar system up the entire East Coast of the United States in 5 separate states to detect incoming Russian aircraft after a hurricane. The cost projected was 1.7 trillion dollars and would take 8 years to build. Meanwhile the Secretary of Defense, Mr. Hegel, is reported to have said, "Internationally calling on a cell phone only costs .03 cents per minute. Perhaps, we could get the Russians to "call ahead" and save the budget."

At the United States Department of Defense, an analyst, working in Langley Virginia, for the Central Intelligence Agency, stated that the CIA believes that, "the Russians, are using an ancient Trojan Horse ploy of "bearing gifts" and that their "strategy" goes back to the Trojan War with the Greeks." The director of the CIA is reported to have said, "We can monitor the activity of the Russians, in our day to day expenses, without any further increase in our budget."

The priest, his wife and four parishioners were taken to hospital.

Shelling from the same assault also hit a hospital, killing two people.

09:42 GMT:

The humanitarian situation in the city of Lugansk, which is under constant shelling by the Ukrainian army, remains critical. Over the last 24 hours 68 civilians have been injured, Lugansk city council reports on Saturday. Representatives of the International Red Cross inspecting the situation in the city have confirmed to the UN that the humanitarian situation in the city is grave.

09:32 GMT:

Employees of the Russian Red Cross can’t come to Ukraine to help with humanitarian aid without approval from the Ukrainian Red Cross, RIA Novosti news agency reported, citing the head of Russia’s Red Cross, Raisa Lukutsova.

Lukutsova said she knows about the negotiations concerning the participation of the International Red Cross committee in the distribution of the aid,“but there is no result yet.”

“I’ve only recently spoken with the president of the Ukrainian Red Cross; they are discussing it, aren’t ready to give an answer. We [Russian Red Cross volunteers] can’t enter the country’s territory without the Ukrainian Red Cross’s consent,”Lukutsova said.

Russia’s Agriculture Ministry raises grain export potential forecast to 27 mln tonnes

Source : http://indian.ruvr.ru/news

Russia’s Agriculture Ministry has raised its forecast of Russia’s grain export potential to 27 million tonnes.

“This year’s grain harvest may prove no less than 100 million tonnes, so we are adjusting the export potential upwards to no less than 25-27 million tonnes,” Agriculture Minister Nikolai Fyodorov said on Friday.

Earlier, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said the progress in the harvesting campaign looked high enough to expect Russia would be able to offer 25 million tonnes of grain on the world market.

“We shall be self-sufficient in grain, build up reserves and even increase export, because the grain harvest is expected at a level of about 100 million tonnes. We have revised the forecast upwards,” he said.

By the beginning of the last third of August Russia’s farm workers had thrashed 66 million tonnes of grain, in contrast to 53 million tonnes on the same date last year.

New S-500 Prometheus air defense system to protect Moscow and Central Russia

Source : Pravda.Ru

The first regiment of state-of-the-art anti-aircraft missile system S-500 will cover Moscow and the center of Russia, commander of the air defense and missile troops, Major-General Andrei Demin said.

"I am sure that after the development and tests, the first regimental group of S-500 will enter service for covering the center of Russia and Moscow," Demin told reporters after attending military drills on Ashuluk range ground.

Earlier, it was reported that the drills with the participation of air defense missile systems S-300 and S-400 were held within the framework of the scheduled large-scale tactical exercises combining air and missile defense forces on Ashuluk range ground in the Astrakhan region.

S-500 "Prometheus" is a Russian anti-aircraft missile system, which was developed by JSC Almaz-Antey as a new generation of anti-aircraft missile systems, in which it was is supposed to apply the principle of separate solution of tasks to destroy ballistic and aerodynamic targets. The prime goal of the complex is to counter medium range ballistic missiles, hypersonic cruise missiles, UAVs, hypersonic missiles, low-orbit satellites and space weapons launched from hypersonic aircraft, as well as attack drones and hypersonic orbital platforms.

Moscow Slams NATO Over Rasmussen’s Statements About Russian Humanitarian Convoy

Source : http://en.ria.ru/politics

MOSCOW, August 23 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Foreign Ministry said the statement of NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen that Russian humanitarian aid convoy entered Ukraine without Kiev’s consent and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) involvement, is another lie.

“In his statement, filled with allegations, Rasmussen claimed that Russian humanitarian aid convoy entered Ukraine ‘without entering the consent of the Ukrainian authorities and without any involvement of the International Committee of the Red Cross.’ This is another lie,” Russia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement Saturday.

Rasmussen said Friday that by entering Ukraine, Russia’s humanitarian aid convoy, Moscow breached its international commitments, including those it recently made in Berlin and Geneva.

“I condemn the entry of a Russian so-called humanitarian convoy into Ukrainian territory without the consent of the Ukrainian authorities and without any involvement of the International Committee of the Red Cross,” Rasmussen said. “This is a blatant breach of Russia’s international commitments, including those made recently in Berlin and Geneva, and a further violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty by Russia.”

“If NATO really wants to know the truth behind the Russian humanitarian mission, including the degree of ICRC’s ‘involvement’ or ‘non-involvement’, we recommend that they contact [ICRC] headquarters,” the ministry said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry reminded that Moscow received a formal agreement from Kiev authorities for the passage of the humanitarian convoy through the Ukrainian border on August 12.

“We act fully in line with norms of the international humanitarian law,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Friday.

On August 14, the trucks with Russian humanitarian aid arrived at the border, but Ukraine began customs clearance only on August 21.

Serbia ready to start dairy deliveries to Russia in 2-3 weeks

Source : http://rt.com/business

Serbia said it’s ready to increase exports to Russia of dairy products, primarily cheese, in the next two or three weeks, adding to the list of countries providing substitutes for embargoed goods from the West.

“We will be ready to deliver dairy products from Serbia if the country’s veterinary service is ready to provide guarantees,” ITAR-TASS quotes Russian Agriculture Minister Nikolai Fyodorov after he met with his Serbian counterpart Snezana Bogosavljevic-Boskovic on Thursday.

Currently there are 41 firms in Serbia authorized to export food to Russia. Russia is ready to grant accelerated access to its market for up to 30 more suppliers, if the country is ready “to be responsible for the activities of these enterprises,” Fyodorov said.

"Russia is interested in all our agricultural and food products, particularly meat, milk, fruit and vegetables. We can export as much cheese as we can produce," Snezana Bogosavljevic-Boskovic, the Serbian Agriculture and Environmental Protection Minister said, adding that such exports would not affect domestic market prices.

The Russian embargo on European agricultural goods created "a unique chance Serbia should use if it is able to meet Russia’s high standards and regulations,"Bogosavljevic-Boskovic said.

Trade in agricultural goods between the Russia and Serbia may almost double from $270 million to half a billion US dollars a year in a short time, Fyodorov assumed.

Serbia would not allow the re-export of European food products banned by Russia through its territory, the Serbian minister said.

“Our side is assuming great responsibility. We promise to do everything possible to control the export procedures,” she said.

On top of that, Bogosavljevic-Boskovic said Serbia is willing to invest in joint agricultural investment projects together with Russian businesses.

Pakistan also said it was ready to replace Australian lamb imports, according to the country’s new Ambassador to Russia Zaheer Aslam Janjua.

Earlier in the month Latin Americancountries, including Ecuador, Brazil, Chile, and Argentina confirmed they would increase meat and dairy product supplies which may appear on Russian supermarket shelves as early as September.

European Commission spokesman Peter Stano said on Friday the EU position concerning the substitution of temporarily banned European goods in the Russian market by third countries, including candidates to join the union, "is clear.”

The European Union "expects" these states"will refrain" from substituting supplies.

Sanctions Against Moscow to Boost Indian Businesses in Russia - Indian Businessman

Source : RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, Sanctionsimposed against Russia will benefit India by boosting cooperation between Indian and Russian businesses, Indian Business Alliance President Sammy Kotwani told RIA Novosti.

“It is only helping them [Indian businesses]. We’ve always had good relations between the two countries on the government level. Now this relationship is going down to business circles. Local authorities are understanding this, they are definitely going to promote trade between these two countries,” Kotwani said.

The alliance president believes that sanctions against Russia are insignificant and do not have any real economic effect, and are merely psychologically pressuring, causing some panic. At the same time, Kotwani says the sanctions are having a positive effect as well.

“We believe that sanctions are small, they didn’t have any effect. But psychologically Russians are getting more problems with the sanctions, they have a panic situation. Media has made panic among Russian people. But legally there is no problem, sanctions are very small,” Kotwani said.

At the same time, the sanctions are helping Russia determine whom to trust.

“With closed eyes Russia trusted Europe and America. But they were never friends with them. Russia trusted them. But there was no same trust from the European side, from the American side,” Kotwani told RIA Novosti.

“We Indians were the oldest friends. We feel that what we were telling them that India and Russia should unite, the BRICS countries should unite to form a stronger alliance. We should trust the old allies, and not the new ones,” the alliance president added.

Kotwani stressed that both Russia and India need to change old stereotypes about one another, to learn more about business perspectives.

Western nations have imposed several rounds of sanctions against Russia over its alleged role in the crisis in Ukraine.

The first round of sanctions was implemented by the United States and the European Union back in March as a response to Crimea’s reunification with Russia following a referendum.

As the Ukrainian crisis escalated, the United States pressed for its Western allies to follow its lead. Norway, Canada, Australia and Japan also responded to the US sanctions push and drew up their own blacklists.

The European Union has so far imposed a total of nine rounds of sanctions, two against the former Ukrainian leadership and seven against Russia. Washington has adopted a total of six rounds of anti-Russia sanctions.

Moscow has repeatedly called the measures counterproductive and denied any involvement in the Ukrainian conflict.

In August Russia introduced protective measures banning the import of agricultural and food products from countries that had imposed sanctions on Russia for a year. The list of banned products includes meat, poultry, fish, seafood, milk, dairy products, fruits and vegetables.

Russia Constructing Mobile Oxygen, Nitrogen Station – Defense Ministry

Source : RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, TheRussian Strategic Missile Troops (RVSN) is creating a mobile nitrogen and oxygen production facility, Dmitry Andreyev, Defense Ministry spokesman for the RVSN, told RIA Novosti on Friday.

“The station is a complex of interconnected equipment that … is able to operate on self-contained diesel powered units,” Andreyev said.

According to the spokesman, the mobile station will enable the production of nitrogen and oxygen under wartime conditions in any given location. Compressed nitrogen can be used in the launch equipment of missile systems.

The Russian Strategic Missile Troops is a branch of the Russian Armed Forces that is in control of Russia’s intercontinental ballistic missiles. The RSVN was created on December 17, 1959, and specializes in the attack of enemy nuclear weapons, military facilities and industrial infrastructure.

Production of S-300 missiles in Russia to be stopped within year — source

Source : ITAR-TASS

MOSCOW, Production of Russia’s S-300 missile systems will be fully stopped next year, a high-ranking source in the Russian military-industrial complex told ITAR-TASS.

This also concerns export versions, he added. “I want to stress that the production of components for S-300 will continue and will even grow in the coming years,” he said.

The source said S-300 missiles would be replaced with a number of new generation systems. “S-400 becomes the main system for our Armed Forces. S-300 missiles remain in operation, and their production will not be halted in a moment,” he said.

Russia's latest air defense system S-400 licensed for export

The source said the marketing policy of Russian producers of air defense systems is now aimed at advancing S-400 to foreign markets.

“We have had a more efficient system for several years, I mean S-400. What is the point in producing things that don’t meet today’s demands of a customer?” he asked, saying S-400 supplies abroad would begin no earlier than in 2016.

Redirecting deliveries

S-300 Favorite missile systems destined for Syria may be delivered to Egypt, a Russian high-ranking defense industry source told ITAR-TASS on Friday.

Egyptian partners have expressed interest in S-300 purchases. The system may be re-equipped for Egypt in a short period of time, the source added.

S-300 system Russia made for Syria may be offered to other customer

If an agreement is reached, software and some units and systems of "Syrian" S-300s will be changed, he said.

Cairo bought about $400 million worth of ammunition from Moscow over the past ten years. A considerable volume of the military enginery bought from the Soviet Union is still in service in Egypt, the source said.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates may provide substantial financial aid for Egypt, he added.

S-400 systems down 3 ballistic missiles during exercises in Astrakhan region

Source : ITAR-TASS

ASHULUK, S-400 air defense systems destroyed three simulated enemy ballistic missiles during military maneuvres in the southern Astrakhan Region on Wednesday, the Commander of the Air and Aerospace Defense Troops, Major General Andrei Demin said.

The purpose of the exercises is to practice skills in responding to massive missile and air attacks, the Defense Ministry spokesperson, Colonel Igor Klimov said.

“S-300 and S-400 systems will launch about 20 missiles today in response to a massive missile and air strike by a hypothetical enemy and destroy high-altitude and low-altitude ballistic targets,” Klimov said, adding that the exercises would imitate a real combat environment involving the use by an imaginary enemy of the full range of aerial assault systems.

About 800 members of the Aerospace Defense Troops and more than 200 pieces of hardware take part in the exercises.

Donetsk Self-Defense Forces Joined by French Volunteers - Interview

Source : http://en.ria.ru/interview/20140821/192221460/Donetsk-Self-Defense-Forces-Joined-by-French-Volunteers.html

MOSCOW, August 21 (RIA Novosti) - The military conflict in southeastern Ukraine has been the focus of politicians, the military and journalists around the world for almost six months now. The world is divided between supporters of Kiev’s new government and those who support the self-defense forces in the southeast.

The Western countries unanimously support the Ukrainian government economically, politically, and via the flow of information. Moreover, there are regular reports of foreign recruits from the US, Italy, Georgia and some other countries fighting in the Ukrainian army and in its National Guard.

However, even among Western countries that have been caught in an information war against  southeastern Ukraine and Russia, there is support for the self-defense troops of the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics. They are willing to lend moral support and even personally help the people of Novorossiya. Some are even eager to enlist.

Several days ago, several French volunteers contacted RIA Novosti. They’d just arrived in  southeastern Ukraine and already felt compelled to tell their first-hand stories about the civil war there to the people of France. What other reasons led them to fight for the besieged people’s republic? They told Sergei Safronov, Head of the Security Agencies Newsdesk, their reasons for taking up the fight.

First of all, please introduce yourself and tell us what brought you to Ukraine.

Guillaume: My name is Guillaume. There are four of us from France; the others are Michel, Victor and Nicolas. We are French volunteers and basically the first wave of an entire group of our fellow citizens, who are either preparing for a trip to Ukraine or are already on their way.

Are there any more French people in Donetsk?

Guillaume: No, but I hear there are some Spanish people. We haven’t seen them yet.

Did you bring a weapon? Are you from the military or are you civilians?

Guillaume: Of course we did not bring any weapons, but we received some from the militia. These are personal service firearms. We are not servicemen at all; we are civilians – basically political volunteers.

Guillaume, you still haven’t mentioned your reasons for going to Ukraine. Why are you here?

Guillaume: We support the geopolitical idea of European unity. We are both revolutionaries and traditionalists. We came to Donbas, where civilians are being killed by agents from Kiev. Those who are conducting this terrorist operation in Donbas are the henchmen of the international mafia oligarchs.
You should clearly understand it is the third world war going on. It started in Libya then moved to Syria and now to Donbas. We can see that Russia is one of a small number of countries that challenged and is almost single-handedly fighting international globalism. It is some kind of a Reconquista. We are here to help Russia in this fight.

Do you get paid?

Guillaume: No, we are not here to make money; no one pays us. Moreover, we paid quite a lot to get here.

How long do you plan to stay here?

Guillaume: For as long as it is necessary to inform the people of France about what is happening here.

Do your family and friends know where you are?

Guillaume: We told a small circle of friends. France doesn’t know we are here. France doesn’t even know that Donbas is at war. The Western media do not report anything. On the contrary, the Western media present Russia as an enemy, an aggressor, a terrorist country. They don’t say anything about the war in Ukraine.
Our presence here will allow the French to receive first-hand information.

Have you already taken part in military operations?

Guillaume: Not yet, but we are ready to take part. It is one of the reasons why we are here.

Where exactly are you?

Guillaume: We are in Donetsk, the Donetsk People’s Republic.

How do you communicate with the self-defense fighters? As far as I understand, you don’t speak Russian or Ukrainian. How do you communicate?

Guillaume: With sounds and gestures.

Good luck!

Guillaume: Merci.

Russian sanctions give Serbia unique chance — agriculture minister

Source : ITAR-TASS

BELGRADE, An opportunity to step up exports of agricultural and food products to Russia is “a unique chance Serbia should use if it is able to meet Russia’s high standards and regulations", the Serbian agriculture and environmental protection minister said.

“The Russian side is interested in all our agricultural and food products, particularly meat, milk, fruit and vegetables. We can export as much cheese as we can produce,” Snezana Bogosavljevic-Boskovic told journalists, adding that such exports would not raise Serbian domestic market prices.

The minister said her country will “do everything possible to promote production at small enterprises as well, which is seen as a big chance by many citizens and politicians".

Sanctions against Russia

Russian officials and companies came under Western sanctions, including visa bans and asset freezes, after Russia incorporated Crimea in mid-March because the West and Kiev refused to recognize Crimea’s reunification with Russia despite Moscow’s explanations that it was legal.

Moscow warned the West that the language of sanctions will have a boomerang effect.

The West announced new sectoral sanctions against Russia in late July over Moscow’s position on the Ukrainian events, in particular, what the West claimed was Moscow’s alleged involvement in mass protests in Ukraine’s war-torn south-east.

Russia's imports ban

In response, Russia imposed on August 6 a one-year ban on imports of beef, pork, poultry, fish, cheeses, fruit, vegetables and dairy products from Australia, Canada, the EU, the United States and Norway.

Sectoral financial sanctions start to be felt in Russian economy — deputy minister

The banned products list includes cattle meat (fresh, chilled and refrigerated), pork (fresh, chilled and refrigerated), poultry meat and all poultry edible by-products, salted meat, pickled meat, dried meat, smoked meat, fish, clams and other water invertebrates, milk and dairy products, vegetables, edible roots and tuber crops.

The list also contains fruit and nuts, sausage and analogous meat products, meat by-products or blood, as well as products made of them, ready-to-eat products including cheeses and cottage-cheese based on vegetable fats.

Egypt will increase the influence of Russia in the Middle East

Source : Vestnik Kavkaza

At the end of last week the presidents of Russia and Egypt agreed to expand trade and economic cooperation between the two countries, in particular to increase the supply of Egyptian agricultural products to Russia by 30%. Vladimir Putin and Abdel Fattah al-Sisi agreed on the need to establish cooperation between Egypt and the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, and the introduction of a simplified regime for access of Egyptian products to the Russian market. During the negotiations the expansion of military-technical cooperation and collaboration in the energy sector were discussed as well. After the summit many experts agreed that Egypt has come out of the zone of American influence, and this creates additional opportunities for Russia. The head of Caucasus Department of the CIS Institute, military expert Vladimir Yevseyev, believes that "Egypt is a country to which the Arab world is largely oriented, so the way Russia will build its relations with Egypt will affect the improving the status of Russia not only in relation to North Africa, but also in the Middle East. This is what will allow Russia to have a serious impact on processes that develop in the greater region generally."Yevseyev recalled that last autumn Egypt spoke out against the use of armed force against Syria, "No state could openly confront Saudi Arabia, but Egypt expressed its opinion that the use of armed force against Syria is counterproductive. And this view was supported by other Arab states. It is clear that Egypt has a certain attenuation factor - economic, maybe domestic policy. But Egypt is a basic state, with whose support we can in general greatly strengthen our position."According to Yevseyev, the internal political situation in Egypt is now normal, "President al-Sisi and the people on whom he relies, have to some extent succeeded in stabilizing the situation. Even half a year ago, we still feared an explosion in Egypt. "And the development of relations with Egypt, according to experts, is principal for Russia. "If it were not for the impediments, not only Saudi Arabia and the United States, but also a number of other countries, then perhaps cooperation could develop quite well in the presence of financial capacity," the expert said.In his opinion, Russia should pay special attention to cooperation with Egypt in the nuclear field: "As soon as the issue of financial security is resolved, I think that Russia will be able to log in to this part of the market as well. What's good about the nuclear field? This is very long-term cooperation, because the construction of a reactor usually takes several years. After construction it is always necessary to maintain the reactor. We are talking about the modernization of the reactor, extension of its service life, and conduction of joint research."Yevseyev also called for the development of bilateral cooperation in the space sector and in the field of military-technical cooperation, but at the same time he forecasted that "there will be powerful opposition from various quarters, to weaken Russian-Egyptian relations in every possible way, because many people, especially in Washington, believe that the strengthening of Russian-Egyptian relations would almost mean the collapse of the development of US-Egyptian relations." Yevseyev considers the latter thesis to be an exaggeration.

Russia announced plans Tuesday to bolster its navy with more advanced weapons in response to NATO's recent threats over Ukraine crisis.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told a general security meeting that he expected to hear a detailed report from Russia's navy commander about how this could be achieved efficiently over the coming six years.

"These proposals must ensure that our forces are reequipped with modern weapons and military equipment," Russian news agencies quoted Shoigu as saying.

The new strategy "must also improve the operational readiness of Russian naval forces in locations posing the greatest strategic threat," said Shoigu.

"I will not hide that this in large part is linked to events of recent months," he said in reference to the pro-Russian insurgency convulsing eastern Ukraine.

NATO and the United States have both stepped up air defenses of former Soviet satellites that are growing increasingly wary of Russia's military ambitions and see President Vladimir Putin as a fast-emerging threat.

US President Barack Obama unveiled a $1 billion security plan for eastern Europe during a June visit to Poland that is aimed at helping countries on Russia's western periphery build more modern armies.

And outgoing NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen expressed concern last week that Putin's ambitions went "beyond Ukraine" and now covered a Russian-speaking region of ex-Soviet Moldova and two separatist parts of the small Caucasus nation of Georgia -- both now closely allied with the European Union.

Russian news reports did not immediately outline what proposal Shoigu and the navy command had in mind.

The Defence Academy of the United Kingdom -- the official post-graduate school for the British military's higher command -- said Russia's current plan through 2020 that Shoigu wants to update is focused on the development of nuclear-powered submarines and aircraft carriers.

France has irritated the United States by pushing through plans to deliver two Mistral-class helicopter carriers that Russia wants to station in Ukraine's seized Crimea peninsula and near a string of disputed islands claimed by Japan.

Russia has only one functioning aircraft carrier that was first commissioned in the Soviet era.

The 10 active carriers available to the United States have posed one of the biggest obstacles to Putin's hopes of countering Washington's global domination with a new alliance between the Kremlin and nations such as China.

Putin promised ahead of his 2012 third-term election to nearly double Russia's military spending over the coming decade to 23 trillion rubles ($635 billion, 475 billion euros).

Lavrov denies reports that Ukraine destroyed Russian armored column

Source : http://en.itar-tass.com/world/745491

BERLIN, August 18. /ITAR-TASS/. The reports, alleging that Ukraine’s security forces have destroyed a Russian armored column do not reflect reality, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday.

“When blatant disinformation is circulated in the media, I think, all adults will be able to distinguish facts from fiction,” the minister told reporters in Berlin. “For example, the reports after talks of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko with UK Prime Minister David Cameron saying that Ukrainian security forces destroyed some military column that advanced to Ukraine from Russia, were incorrect.”

“That’s what actually happened roughly at that time: a Ukrainian military column that moved towards the Luhansk region([in eastern Ukraine), to all appearances, with the aim to cut off the humanitarian aid delivery route, was destroyed by the separatist militia. That’s what happened,” Lavrov said.

“If such events are represented as gallant successes of the Ukrainian army - all right, do as you please, but don’t put on us the blame for this,” the foreign minister said.

17 Ukrainian servicemen who crossed Russian border brought back to homeland

A total of 17 Ukrainian servicemen who crossed the border to Russia in the southern Russian Rostov Region on Saturday have been brought back to their country, a spokesman for the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) regional border department said Sunday.

“They crossed to our territory on Saturday morning and were in the border area of the Matveyev-Kurgan District. Today an armored Ural truck brought them to the Veselo-Voznesenka border crossing point, where they were handed to the Ukrainian side,” Nikolai Sinitsyn said.

“A bus took them on Ukrainian territory,” Sinitsyn said.

Earlier he said that “prior to crossing the border with the Russian Federation, the servicemen threw down arms at their side of the border.”

Incidents when soldiers from the Ukrainian side cross into Russian territory have been reported recently amid fierce clashes between troops loyal to Kiev and local militias in the southeastern Ukrainian Donetsk and Lugansk regions. In one such incident, 438 Ukrainian servicemen on August 4 asked Russian border guards to let them cross the border to Russia. The soldiers returned to Ukraine later.

The Ukrainian armed forces have been conducting since mid-April a military operation to regain control over the breakaway Donetsk and Lugansk regions, which on May 11 proclaimed their independence at local referendums.

In the operation, Kiev has used armored vehicles, heavy artillery and attack aviation. Hundreds of civilians have been killed in it. Many buildings have been destroyed and tens of thousands of people have had to flee Ukraine’s embattled Southeast.

Moscow Calls on US to Push Kiev in Stopping Fratricidal War, Violence - Lavrov

Source : http://en.ria.ru/politics

BERLIN, August 18 (RIA Novosti) — Moscow has called on Washington to use its influenceon Kiev to stop the fratricidal war and violence in eastern Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday.

"We are sending a signal to that [the US] influences the Ukrainian authorities and is able to stop this fratricidal war and the beginning of a negotiation process," Lavrov said.

Lavrov said that unlike Ukraine, Russia has lived up to the previous Berlin agreement of July 2, which said there would be observers and Ukrainian border guards at the Russia border crossings, but only in a situation when a ceasefire is in place.

"Ceasefire has not been achieved. Of course it's a two-way street, and our colleagues from Kiev complain that they cannot talk to representatives of the militia. But when you are constantly under bombardment, for example, in Luhansk, it is very hard to communicate. So, the United States can actually influence Kiev in this regard," the foreign minister said.

Negotiations between Sergei Lavrov and Pavlo Klimkin were held Sunday night at the Villa Borsig hotel in Berlin, Germany. The talks were also attended by German foreign chief Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his French counterpart Laurent Fabius.

The meeting of the foreign chiefs was the second four-party meeting of the kind. During the previous talks on July 2, also in Berlin, the four foreign ministers agreed on a declaration that called for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine’s southeast.

Kiev launched a special operation in eastern Ukraine in mid-April to suppress independence supporters who refused to recognize the legitimacy of its new authorities. Moscow has repeatedly urged Ukrainian authorities to immediately stop the punitive operation and seek a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

According to a report by the mission of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), nearly 1,400 people have beenkilled since the special operation in eastern Ukraine began, while about 117,000 of Ukrainians have been forced to flee their homes and cross into neighboring Russia in search of shelter.

Russian humanitarian convoy moving toward Ukrainian border

Source :

MOSCOW, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- The first 16 trucks of a Russian humanitarian aid convoy has started moving toward Ukrainian border on Sunday, local media reported.

The trucks would approach the border on Sunday, but they would not cross the border, the Itar-Tass news agency quoted a representative of the contractor transport company as saying.

More trucks are expected to be moving from the town of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky in Russia's Rostov Region, where they were parked, throughout the day to the border checkpoint.

Representatives of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) were expected to go to the Donetsk border crossing, the company's spokesperson said.

"We expect representatives of that international organization to come to the border crossing station today," according to the spokesperson.

Representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) were inspecting the Russian trucks still parking in the town, where they had stayed for days awaiting the permission of the Ukrainian authorities to cross the border, the Itar-Tass reported earlier, quoting Pascal Cuttat, head of the ICRC regional delegation.

The Ukrainian government said in a statement late Saturday night, that Kiev recognized the supplies dispatched by Russia as humanitarian aid.

"Ukrainian Social Policy Minister Lyudmila Denisova has signed a decree recognizing the ICRC cargo as relief aid," the statement said, adding that the ministry received a letter signed by Cuttat on Aug. 16 enumerating the relief items.

Earlier on Saturday, the ICRC notified Kiev of the inspection results of the cargo transported by the Russian convoy, according to the Itar-Tass.

A 280-truck Russian convoy carrying about 2,000 tons of relief supplies, including food, medicine, sleeping bags and electricity generators, has been parked about 30 km from the border with Ukraine's Lugansk region since Thursday.

According to the press service of Ukraine's anti-terror operation, 41 Ukrainian frontier guards and 18 customs officers began inspecting the cargo on Friday. Once cleared, the humanitarian aid will go to the violence-hit Lugansk region.

Philosopher king: Putin says Russia must strike balance between dignity and international cooperation

Source : http://www.sott.net/article/283763

Russians must consolidate and develop their country, neither sliding into isolationism nor sacrificing their dignity for the sake of pleasing anyone, President Vladimir Putin declared.

"We have to develop our country with calm, dignity and efficiency, without barricading ourselves from the outer world or breaking ties with partners, but also without allowing anyone to treat us with disrespect," he told Russian MPs in Yalta, Crimea.

He called on a consolidation of the people, "not for the sake of any wars or conflict," but "for an industrious labor force for Russia and in Russia's name."

The president defended sanctions of food imports, which the Russian government imposed in response to several rounds of anti-Russian sanctions of the West.

"It's not just a response. First of all, it's support for domestic producers and the opening of our markets to the countries and producers, who want and are willing to cooperate with Russia," Putin said.

Whatever the foreign relations of Russia are, "our focus now is on domestic affairs, on the goals and tasks which the people of Russia challenge us with," he added.

Western nations, championed by the US, have imposed several series of sanctions against a number of Russian companies and individuals to punish Moscow for what they see as aggression against Ukraine.

The Kremlin believes that the policy is counterproductive and hypocritical, since the political crisis in Ukraine, which escalated into a civil war in the eastern parts of the country, was to a large extent caused by Washington and Brussels.

Relations between Russia and Western powers are at their worst point since the Cold War, as the parties appear to be starting a trade war.

Increased Brazil-Russia Trade Could Antagonize the West - Expert

Source : http://en.ria.ru/analysis

Washington, August 13 (RIA Novosti) - The opportunity, created for BRICS group of emerging economies’ member Brazil to increase its food exports to Russia, following the ban imposed by Moscow on the United States and European Union food products, could put Brazil at odds with Washington, the head of the DC-based Brazil Institute told RIA Novosti.

“Can you supply to Russia what Russia won’t get anymore...from Europe and the United States? By doing that, do you risk, yourself, getting into a political imbroglio with two countries with whom you have very traditional and long-lasting relations?” questioned Paulo Sotero, who does not want to see the economic gains of the BRICS jeopardized by geopolitical tensions between partner-states and the West.

Despite this, Brazilian media reports indicate a strong willingness by Brazilian companies to fill the gap left by the food embargo, with Brazil’s Association of Meat Exporters saying on Tuesday that beef exports to Russia were $692 million in July, a 19-percent increase from 2013.

“This is something that the farmers, exporters, and Brazilian authorities are considering, this new scenario, because it is not a typical scenario,” explained Sotero, questioned how Brazilian companies will maneuver around the sanctions while operating subsidiaries in the United States and Europe.

“I believe that the companies, not wanting to lose business, are probably very busy devising those strategies. At the same time, I see there is an implication here that is potentially a political implication, a geopolitical implication.”

On August 7, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev announced a ban on a number of foodstuffs, including pork, beef, poultry, dairy, and fruits and vegetables, coming from the United States, European Union, Canada, Australia and Norway.
