In an interview with WirtschaftsWoche, German Minister of Agriculture Christian Schmidt said that a compromise with Moscow could significantly improve the relations between the two countries German Minister of Agriculture Christian Schmidt intends to meet with his Russian counterpart, Nikolai Fyodorov, at the International Green Week industry fair in Berlin and discu ss relaxing the embargo on German agricultural produce. Russia will be one of the major exhibitors at Green Week, taking up 3,600 square meters of the display space. The German minister hopes that the two countries will soon get back to their former level of cooperation in agriculture. According to the interview, Schmidt does not believe that Russia’s lifting the embargo will automatically lead to an easing of the western sanctions against Russia. Earlier, Schmidt said that farming producers in Europe will not receive full compensation for the losses caused by Russia’s response to the sanctions. Meanwhile, Norwegian journalist Morten Jentoft, who has lived in Moscow for several years, claims he does not see the impact of the economic sanctions on the selection offered at Moscow stores, despite the West’s negative spin on the events. Jentoft says that Russian producers managed to replace the western food products with domestic ones.
