Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree which sets out the conditions for foreign nationals serving in the Russian Armed Forces on a contractual basis.
The document, available on the official legal news website since January 2, declares that "military service personnel who are foreign citizens participate in executing tasks under martial-law, as well as in armed conflicts in accordance with the generally accepted principles and rules of international law, Russia's international treaties and Russian laws."
No contract may be signed with a foreign citizen who is under investigation or is standing trial, has a criminal record or is serving a prison sentence
The decree also sets out further conditions for peacetime military service by Russian citizens who have no foreign nationality in the Russian Armed Forces, the Interior Ministry Internal Troops and military units of the Federal Firefighting Service.
