Russia closes South Stream project"Given the fact that we still have not received permission from Bulgaria, we believe that Russia under these conditions cannot continue this project," Russian President Vladimir Putin said today in Ankara, speaking about the South Stream pipeline project."I mean that now we need to start the construction of the pipeline system in the Black Sea. We cannot start the construction works in the sea before we get the permission from Bulgaria," he said, suggesting that Bulgaria can request compensation from the EU for loss of profit on the South Stream project.At the same time, Putin stressed that Russia had everything ready to work on the South Stream."We believe that the position of the European Commission was not constructive. And if Europe does not want to implement it, then it will not be implemented," he said.
