Russian security services expose 230 foreign agents: Putin

Russia says its counterintelligence services have exposed more than 230 foreign agents so far this year.

President Vladimir Putin said in a Saturday speech in the capital, Moscow, “Activity of foreign special services working on Russia is on the rise since only the counterintelligence service alone has exposed 230 employees and agents of foreign intelligence.”

The Russian president also called on the security services to pay further attention to the protection of state borders.

“The Foreign Intelligence Service is faced with a broad range of tasks, first of all prognosis and analysis of possible risks and threats, along with assessment of the current and probable development of key international events,” Russia’s Itar-Tass quoted Putin as saying.

“The activities of 46 terrorist and extremist organizations have been stopped in the country,” Putin said.

In April, the Russian president said the country’s security agencies had exposed a total of 258 foreign agents and 46 intelligence staff in 2013.
